It's one of the most common questions we get asked — and the answer is simpler than you might think. Whether you're getting a weak scent or finding it too overpowering, the amount of wax melt you use makes a big difference. Here's how to get it just right.
The Short Answer
For most standard wax warmers, one to two pieces of wax melt is the perfect starting point. That's typically around 5–10g of wax, depending on the shape and size of your melts.
But It Depends on a Few Things...
Room size
The bigger the room, the more wax you'll need to achieve a good scent throw. For a small bedroom or bathroom, one piece is usually plenty. For a large open-plan living space, two pieces will give a stronger, more noticeable fragrance.
Your warmer
Electric warmers tend to heat wax more evenly and consistently than tea light warmers, which can mean a stronger scent throw from the same amount of wax. If you're using a tea light warmer, you may find you need slightly more wax to achieve the same effect.
The fragrance itself
Some scents are naturally more powerful than others. Citrus and fresh scents tend to be lighter and may need a little more wax, while warm, spicy, or musky scents can be very potent — start with less and build up.
Your personal preference
Fragrance is entirely subjective. Some people love a subtle background scent; others want their whole home to smell amazing the moment they walk in. Start small and adjust to your taste.
Our Recommended Starting Point
| Room Size | Recommended Amount |
|---|---|
| Small (bathroom, bedroom) | 1 piece |
| Medium (kitchen, dining room) | 1–2 pieces |
| Large (open-plan living space) | 2–3 pieces |
Can You Use Too Much Wax Melt?
Yes — and it's a common mistake! Using too much wax can actually make the scent smell flat or synthetic rather than beautiful. This is because the fragrance oils can become overwhelming at high concentrations. Less is often more — start with one piece and add another if you want more intensity.
Tips for a Better Scent Throw
- Keep your warmer clean — residue from old wax can mute the scent of new melts
- Position your warmer centrally in the room for the best fragrance distribution
- Close doors and windows initially to let the scent build, then open them once the room is fragranced
- Give it time — fragrance throw builds gradually over 10–15 minutes, so don't add more wax too quickly
When Should You Change Your Wax?
When the scent fades, it's time for a fresh melt — not more wax on top of the old. Adding new wax on top of spent wax won't revive the scent; it will just dilute the new fragrance. Clean your warmer first, then start fresh.
